Citizen Science in the Natural Sciences
2021
AbstractThe natural sciences include the life and physical sciences and study nature through observing and understanding phenomena, testing hypotheses, and performing experiments. Key principles such as reliability, validity, objectivity, and predictability are achieved through transparent assumptions, methods, data, and interpretations as well as multidisciplinarity. In this chapter we present insights into the genesis of citizen science in the natural sciences and reflect on the intellectual history of the natural sciences in relation to citizen science today. Further, we consider the current scientific approaches and achievements of natural science projects, which are applying citizen sci…
Fabrication of Diffractive Optics: Surface Reliefs and Artificial Dielectrics
1997
After a period of fundamental theoretical research, the field of diffractive optics is now reaching a time of assessment, when we can define the useful limits of each design procedure. Selecting a suitable procedure derives from a compromise between several factors, including design time, desired optical efficiency, and precision. A major consideration in finding such a compromise has been, and still is today, the availability of technologies which can realize the design by generating the diffracting structure with assigned tolerances.
Industry Reallocations in a Globalizing Economy
2007
We distill the main insights from recent trade models on firms' responses to globalization. Our primary aim is to assess the economic impact and the welfare implications of the resulting reallocation of resources across firms and countries. In so doing, we bring theory into life through the numerical implementation of a theoretical framework calibrated on European data, which encompasses aspects of economic geography, firm heterogeneity, and firms' organizational choices. Our final purpose is to provide a comprehensive background for empirical investigations and to stimulate further theoretical research.
Transition to hospital process orientation: The case of regional hospitals in Latvia
2015
Management of processes instead of functions has growing importance into the health care. Transition to hospital process orientation (HPO) changes the way physicians and other health professionals have used to practice before. Study was performed to explore factors affecting introduction of HPO in Latvian hospitals responding to significant external pressures during the years of economic crisis to detect the best practices used for process management implementation in clinical setting. To reach the research goal dissimilarities between current performance and management of hospitals were explored. As changes in hospital reimbursement system demand improved efficiency, hospital’s performance…
Educación artística : revista de investigación
2020
Determining the indicators of social capital theory to social network sites
2014
The authors theoretical research provided a framework to define and measure social capital in social network sites. This paper determining with a qualitative method the theoretical dimensions of this framework. The result of this paper is the explanation of social capital theory in social network sites under the consideration of the identified indicators. The sample for this case is students, and the research needs further confirmation by other samples and methods. But this paper gives a first interesting insight in social network sites explained with the social capital theory and provides a first guidance for further research projects.
Theory of Neutrinos: A White Paper
2005
During 2004, four divisions of the American Physical Society commissioned a study of neutrino physics to take stock of where the field is at the moment and where it is going in the near and far future. Several working groups looked at various aspects of this vast field. The summary was published as a main report entitled ``The Neutrino Matrix'' accompanied by short 50 page versions of the report of each working group. Theoretical research in this field has been quite extensive and touches many areas and the short 50 page report provided only a brief summary and overview of few of the important points. The theory discussion group felt that it may be of value to the community to publish the e…

Neutrinoless double-electron capture
2014
Direct determination of the neutrino mass is at the present time one of the most important aims of experimental and theoretical research in nuclear and particle physics. A possible way of detection is through neutrinoless double-electron capture, $0\ensuremath{\nu}\mathrm{ECEC}$. This process can only occur when the energy of the initial state matches precisely that of the final state. We present here a calculation of prefactors (PFs) and nuclear matrix elements (NMEs) within the framework of the microscopic interacting boson model (IBM-2) for $^{124}\mathrm{Xe}$, $^{152}\mathrm{Gd}$, $^{156}\mathrm{Dy}$, $^{164}\mathrm{Er}$, and $^{180}\mathrm{W}$. From the PF and NME we calculate the expe…
